How to Work Out When You’d Rather Be Watching Netflix

Posted on January 13, 2017

Nine ways to summon the motivation when you just don’t feel like it.

1. Tell Yourself You’ll Do 12 Minutes – Turn on your favorite music and focus on 12 to 20 minutes of exercise. Guess what happens? You’ll probably exercise longer!

2. Create a Target Gift – Make this a weekly or monthly gift to yourself—like a fancy latte or new pair of shoes. Every time you work out, put a dollar or two in a jar (in a visible place).

3. Commit to a Goal - Committing to something makes you accountable.

4. Shift Some Habits - Write down five habits you must change to achieve your goal. They must be realistic and achievable.

5. Remember the ‘Why’ - Ask yourself the reason why you are working out (even though there are 20 other things you’d rather be doing!).

6. Find Ways to Make Workouts Fun - Meet up with a workout friend and afterwards, go out for iced coffee. If you’re accountable to someone else, it’s hard to cancel on them and yourself.

7. Make your Goals Visual –Determine a goal related to fitness/weight loss that you’re excited about (beach vacation, wedding, etc.). Put a photo related to that goal as your wallpaper on your phone as a reminder.

8. Put Some Money Behind It - Book a class in advance. If you invest ahead of time, you’ll be more likely to attend (even if you’d rather be on the couch!).

9. Remember how you feel when it’s over - Usually you’re more energized, less stressed and happier after your workout!
