Credit Unions No. 1 in
Trust, Satisfaction
Consumers rate credit unions higher than banks on satisfaction and trustworthiness,
according to the American Banker/Gallup 1999 Consumer Survey, a national poll of about
1,000 respondents.
While credit unions have ranked first place in satisfaction for each of the past 15 years,
this year marks the first time credit unions have surpassed banks in terms of
trustworthiness.
"These results speak volumes about how consumers feel about credit unions," says
Daniel A. Mica, president and chief executive officer of the Credit Union National
Association in Washington, D.C. "Trust is earned, not bought or negotiated. Credit
unions say they are member-focused, concerned with the needs of the people they serve.
Then they go out and prove it every business day. That is how you earn trust."
Members also say service is improving. Thirty percent of members who say credit unions are
their primary financial institutions report that the quality of service is improving. Only
about 20% of bank and savings institution customers say their service is improving.
